Although the spring water is clear and has historically been used as drinking water, studies have shown that the springs are influenced by surface water. Because surface water can contain microorganisms and other contaminants that are not visible, current drinking water regulations require filtration and disinfection before this water can be delivered to customers. Studies conducted in Neffs Canyon demonstrated this connection. During testing, a harmless dye introduced into a nearby creek appeared in the spring water much sooner than would be expected if the water were traveling only through deeper groundwater aquifers. In addition, routine monitoring by JVWCD has occasionally detected bacteria and other indicators associated with surface water influence. These findings reinforce the need for treatment before the water can be delivered as drinking water. The proposed treatment process would provide the additional protection required to meet current drinking water standards.
